You need to start it now as the mice are moving inside and make sure you leave it under the porch or some other sheltered location outside - you want to draw them out for the 'food' after which they will get thirsty, look for water and never come back into your home. The Ousta-mouse boxes worked well - pretty much wiped them out. However, other critters are chewing the mouse hole opening larger. The solution - epoxy large washers over the mouse hole.
