This is a great article! I've never done much commenting on other peoples' blogs, but after reading this I'll certainly be paying more attention to it!

Another great way to get yourself an ad-free guest book is to open up your website blog and allow comments (just like cottageblogger.com). This may make some bloggers a little nervous since visitors may add negative comments, but if you providing honest, useful information then you shouldn't be afraid to do this.

Word of mouth works negatively, as well. I am relieved that we did not have anyone renting our property this week. If anyone asked me for a referral, I would have to tell them that the property next door has had loud-mouthed boors. Despite a rental agency, and fellow renters who will help market the neighbours if our cottages are booked, and working as a community - things happen. My blog tells the story....http://mymuskoka.blogspot.com/2008/07/renters.html

I think it wise to tell renters to be proactive and nip such noise issues in the bud. It can only get worse, as my story tells. I will be writing up this suggestion for our next renters: phone the OPP if you hear of any issues: 1-888-310-1122. This protects property owners, as well as guests. If a renter is rowdy, there is a possibility that they will not been looking after a cottage, either.
