Gone Away! Off For A Road Trip

by CottageGuru on October 5, 2008

fifth_wheel I have been a little lax in posting these past few days because I’m getting ready for my annual vacation, and nope, it’s not in a cottage. Because I’m one of those fortunate ones who gets to live at the cottage all year, once October comes around, the logs have all been stacked, and the boat is safely stored at the marina, we head off south to explore the US.  This year we’re taking the new fifth wheel and truck and are off to Arizona tomorrow.

While on the road, I’ll be working on a few projects to bring more information to vacation home owners, particularly those who want to increase their income beyond rentals. When you begin thinking laterally, there are tons of ways to create income streams related to your cottage rental business. From creating an income generating web site, to writing local guide books; working in partnership with local activity providers, to selling arts and crafts, there are so many opportunities to boost your revenue.

I’ll be posting along the way; reviewing some new products and services, and coming up with more ideas for making the most of your vacation rental property.

That’s awesome, I can’t wait to read those articles. Have you ever thought about allowing other blogs to reproduce your articles with a link back to you?

I’d love to put some of these on my blog…

It’s great to hear you’re getting some time off. I totally agree, there are many other avenues you can follow to make the most from your vacation website. Local guidebooks are a great idea and they can help to differentiate you as an expert about the area of your VR. How about discussion groups too, so that your fellow renters can get together and talk about their experiences?

My husband and I are new at managing a vacation rental property. Our home has creek frontage and we are just minutes from Gulf Shores, AL beach. We fully expected to put our website live online, pay for local tv and newspaper ads and be booked solid. Boy are WE naive. We didn’t know a thing about social media: blogs, twitter etc. Out of desperation (having to pay mortgage on an empty fully furnished home) we discovered a “lateral” way to earn income — rent kayaks trips from the creek. I don’t know if we will ever be considered “experts” but we can sure tell it like it is!

Now more that ever you can?t afford to just sit back as your competitors will be working overtime to make as much money as they were pre-recession.
