My husband and I are new at managing a vacation rental property. Our home has creek frontage and we are just minutes from Gulf Shores, AL beach. We fully expected to put our website live online, pay for local tv and newspaper ads and be booked solid. Boy are WE naive. We didn’t know a thing about social media: blogs, twitter etc. Out of desperation (having to pay mortgage on an empty fully furnished home) we discovered a “lateral” way to earn income — rent kayaks trips from the creek. I don’t know if we will ever be considered “experts” but we can sure tell it like it is!

It's great to hear you're getting some time off. I totally agree, there are many other avenues you can follow to make the most from your vacation website. Local guidebooks are a great idea and they can help to differentiate you as an expert about the area of your VR.
